Regional Government supports Azorean emigrants’ social integration

This month, the Government of the Azores has already granted financial support to 12 social institutions that serve the Azorean communities in the United States of America and Canada, totaling 30 thousand euros. These supports granted within the scope of the annual financial cooperation protocols signed with the Regional Directorate for the Communities aim at implementing Azorean emigrants’ social integration programs and promoting their quality of life in their host societies. In the United States, support was given to P.O.S.S.O – Portuguese Organization for Services and Opportunities, and VALER – Valley Area Living Enabling Resources, both from the State of California, as well as to Catholic Social Services, Immigrants Assistance Centre, MAPS – Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, and SER – Jobs for Progress, Inc, all in the State of Massachusetts. In Canada, the support now granted covered four institutions in the province of Ontario, namely Toronto Abrigo Centre , Working Women Community Centre, Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga, and Portuguese Support Service for Quality Living, in addition to Social Community Action Centre of Montreal, and Mission Santa Cruz, in the province of Quebec. These supports granted under the terms of Ordinance no. 68/2008 of  11 August highlight the Government of the Azores’s  interest in and support of the social integration of Azorean emigrants, investing in the cooperation with these community institutions and recognizing the important mission they carry out by our larger communities.
