José Manuel Bolieiro marks 175 years of Azorean emigration in Bermuda

The President of the Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, is making an official visit to Bermuda between November 1 and 5, on an occasion that celebrates 175 years of official Azorean emigration to the territory (1849-2024). As well as paying tribute to the Azorean legacy in Bermuda, this visit represents a unique opportunity for the Government of the Azores to project the Region’s potential. During the visit, President Bolieiro will meet the Governor of Bermuda, Rena Lalgie, and will visit the Azores Gallery at the Bermuda National Museum, where he will be accompanied by the museum’s executive director, Elena Strong. This time will allow him to see a collection that portrays Azorean history and its influence on local culture. The program also includes a reception organized by the House of the Azores of Bermuda, which aims to promote Azorean culture in the community and provide a moment of conviviality with members of the Azorean and Portuguese diaspora. As part of his official agenda, the President will meet with the Premier of Bermuda, Hon. E. David Burt, accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Walter H. Roban, and the Minister for Transport, Hon. Wayne L. Furbert, reinforcing the commitment to cooperation and friendship between the Azores and Bermuda. Throughout this visit, the Government of the Azores intends to strengthen relations with the Government of Bermuda, exploring new possibilities for scientific and technological cooperation, through sustainable development. This strengthening of ties could open doors to partnerships that consolidate the Azores as a benchmark in the blue economy and space research, affirming the Region as a central platform for innovation and knowledge in the Atlantic. In recent years, the Azores have taken a leading and innovative stance in the space and maritime sectors, areas in which the region’s geostrategic position is an invaluable resource. This visit aims to reinforce the Atlantic centrality of the Azores, continuing the establishment of new synergies and collaborations in the field of science, research and innovation, promoting the development of pioneering projects and international partnerships that drive technological and scientific advances.
