Government wants to continue to strengthen ties with the USA and the Azorean descent communities, says José Manuel Bolieiro
The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, emphasized today that it is the Government intention to keep “a relationship of proximity” with the United States of America (USA), reminding the importance of migrant communities on the east and west coasts of the country.
José Manuel Bolieiro received this afternoon, at Palácio de Sant’Ana, the new US ambassador to Portugal, Randi Charno Levine, that had her first official work visit to the Azores after taking office, a visit that “praises” the region, stated the President of the Government.
At the meeting, it was approached the “major subjects that must be kept” in the agenda, as the importance of Lajes Air Base or the commitment reaffirmation of “partnership and friendship between Portugal and the USA, with special focus” on the Azores’ role.
The role of FLAD – Luso-American Development Foundation on the relation between the archipelago and the USA was pointed out, and José Manuel Bolieire reminded that, also in the cultural field, there are several possibilities for artistic exchange that can be explored.
The Ambassador was accompanied at the audience in Ponta Delgada by the US Consul to the Azores, Kathryn Ryan Hammond.
Randi Charno Levine was appointed as US Ambassador to Portugal at the end of October 2021, and has been in office for a little over a month. In this visit to the Azores, she travel to the islands of São Miguel and Terceira.
