Conference in Terceira addresses influence of Azorean folklore in Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay
The Regional Secretariat for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities, through the Regional Directorate for the Communities, is promoting an international conference on “Different Expressions of Azorean Folklore” on Thursday, October 10, at 9 pm at the Angra do Heroísmo Museum Auditorium on Terceira Island.
This initiative aims to be a space for learning and sharing about the different forms of folklore of Azorean origin in the Azorean-Gaucho folklore of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and the Azorean-Carollo folklore of Uruguay.
The conference features as its main participants the president of the House of the Azores of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Viviane Peixoto Hunter, and the president of the House of the Azores of Uruguay – Los Azoreños, Alicia Quintana, accompanied by folklorist Milenna de Léon. Between them, they promote two groups of Azorean origin in the cities of Gravataí and San Carlos, respectively.
This international conference is open to the general public and is especially aimed at all the members of different folklore groups on the island of Terceira.
The session will be opened by the Regional Director for the Communities, José Andrade. The works will be moderated by Terceira-born historian Francisco Maduro-Dias, who has significant ties to popular culture.
Among the various cultural manifestations brought to the main destinations of Azorean emigration, folklore is one that continues to have the greatest expression in our communities.
Present in the daily cultural life of Azorean associations and organisations, folklore represents a privileged means of maintaining and transmitting the cultural values of the nine islands of the archipelago.
