Azorean descendant in Connecticut wins photo contest promoted by Presidency of the Government
Azorean descendant Daniele Judith Muniz won the “The Island and the World” photo contest, an initiative of the Presidency of the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for the Communities, in partnership with SATA Azores Airlines.
The jury decided to distinguish the photo by Daniela Judith Muniz, a native of Brazil, a descendant of Azoreans from Faial Island and a resident of Connecticut, United States of America.
According to the jury, the winning photo “symbolises the strength and courage” of the people who, “over the years, have dared to leave their comfort zones and search for a better life in a then unknown country.”
“The author presented the most coherent body of work, relating some aspects of our culture/traditions to the country of destination, such as working the land and cattle raising, the construction of dry stone walls and, in general, the love and respect for nature,” noted the contest judges.
The contest jury was made up of Gabriela Pontes, president of the Association of Amateur Photographers of the Azores, and professional photographers Luís Godinho, from Terceira Island, and Pepe Brix, from Santa Maria.
The winner will be awarded an air ticket for two people, with departure from any of the airports outside the Region where SATA operates to one of the Azorean airports of their choice.
The “The Island and the World” photo contest registered 14 entries, with a total of 67 photographs, submitted by participants from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Maranhão and Minhas Gerais), Canada (Alberta and British Columbia) and the United States (California, Connecticut and Iowa).
With this initiative, aimed at Azoreans and their descendants residing outside the Azores and registered on the Azoreans in the World platform, the Azorean Government intended to showcase the countries and cities in the world where they are based.
