3rd Azores/Brazil Meeting brings together Azorean descendants in Rio de Janeiro
The Presidency of the Azorean Government, through the Regional Directorate for the Communities, is promoting the 3rd Azores/Brazil Meeting on Saturday, July 23, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The event brings together, for the first time, the presidents of the Houses of the Azores and the Azorean Diaspora advisers representing the Azoreans and Azorean descendants from the different Brazilian states.
This initiative is part of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Hous of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro, the oldest in Brazil. It aims to strengthen and invigorate the Region’s relations with its first emigrant destination and with its largest immigrant community.
The Regional Director for the Communities, José Andrade, is chairing the 3rd Azores/Brazil Meeting and the programme celebrating the 70th anniversary of the House of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro, representing the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro.
The plenary session will feature successive speeches on “The Azorean presence today and its reinforcement tomorrow,” “Recent emigration and ancestral communities,” “The contribution of the Houses of the Azores and the role of Advisers,” and “Interstate cooperation and the Brazil/Azores relations.
The event will involve the participation of the highest representatives of the Houses of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro (João Leonardo Soares), São Paulo (Roberto de Melo Correia), Santa Catarina (Sérgio Luiz Ferreira), Rio Grande do Sul (Viviane Peixoto Hunter) and Maranhão (Paulo Matos), as well as of the president of the new House of the Azores of the State of Espírito Santo, Nino Moreira Seródio.
The meeting also features the speeches of the Azorean Diaspora advisers elected by the states of Rio de Janeiro (Daniel Gonçalves), São Paulo (José Luís Jacob), Santa Catarina (Willian Agostinho Marques) and Rio Grande do Sul (Régis Marques Gomes), besides the councillor elected to represent other states of Brazil, Aristides Bogéa Bittencourt.
The President of the Permanent Council of the Council of the Portuguese Communities, Flávio Martins, will be the special guest at this 3rd Meeting Azores/Brazil, which takes place at the headquarters of the House of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro, from 4 pm, with free admission for the general public.
The 1st Meeting took place in October 2021 at the Conceição Palácio da Conceição in Ponta Delgada. It was attended by the presidents of the Houses of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and Maranhão, as well as by the Association of Azorean Emigrants and CRESAÇOR’s Migrant Support Office.
The 2nd Meeting took place in March 2022 at the Capitães-Generais Palace in Angra do Heroísmo. The event was attended by the Azorean Diaspora advisers elected by Brazil and also involved the participation of ASIBA – Association of Brazilian Immigrants in the Azores and AIPA – Azores Immigrants’ Association.
The celebration programme for the 70th anniversary of the House of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro also includes a solemn session to be held on July 22, which will feature a conference by the Regional Director for the Communities, José Andrade. On July 24, there will be a social lunch with the community of Azoreans and Azorean descendants, including a performance by the Padre Tomaz de Borba Folk Dance Group.
