The Azorteatro group from the House of the Azores of Uruguay – Los Azore\u00f1os is travelling to the Azores to present the play “Permaneci\u00f3 y Floreci\u00f3” on the islands of S\u00e3o Miguel, Terceira and Faial, on October 8, 9 and 10, respectively.<\/p>\n

This is a play celebrating the 260th anniversary of the Azorean foundation of the city of San Carlos, in Uruguay, which is now coming to the Azores at the initiative of the Regional Secretariat for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities, through the Regional Directorate for the Communities.<\/p>\n

The Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive auditorium on the island of S\u00e3o Miguel will host the premiere of this production in the Azores on Tuesday, October 8, at 9:30 pm.<\/p>\n

The following day, October 9, “Permaneci\u00f3 y Floreci\u00f3” will be performed at the Alpendre Theatre Group auditorium in Angra do Hero\u00edsmo, Terceira Island, also at 9:30 pm.<\/p>\n

The third and final performance by the Azorteatro group takes place on Friday, October 11, at the Velas Municipal Auditorium, S\u00e3o Jorge Island, at 9:30 pm, on the occasion of the general assembly of the World Council of Houses of the Azores.<\/p>\n

The three shows are open to the general public and will be preceded by a short talk by Uruguayan writer and researcher Raquel Dom\u00ednguez de Minetti about the nine presidents of the Republic of Uruguay, including the current one, who have Azorean ancestry.<\/p>\n

Declared of Municipal Interest by the Municipality of San Carlos, the play “Permaneci\u00e9 y Florecio” is directed by Lucas Garc\u00eda, who is also in the cast alongside Sonia Bali\u00f1o, Daniel Chavez, Alejandra Dutra, Juan Carlos Ferro, Lucas Garc\u00eda, Micaela Silva, Susana P\u00e9rez and Sebastian Vanderhoeght.<\/p>\n

In 1763, a group of 140 Azorean families were taken from the territory that is now the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, to Uruguay, where they founded San Carlos, a city now located in the department of Maldonado.<\/p>\n

The Azorean legacy lives on in the city to this day, largely due to the work of the House of the Azores of Uruguay – Los Azore\u00f1os, which has been active since 1963. This institution is supported by the Government of the Azores, through a financial cooperation protocol, with a view to promoting various annual initiatives to preserve and disseminate Azorean culture in that city and region.<\/p>\n
